Salisbury Fire and Rescue seeks donations for local food bank

Christmas is when communities come together.

The Salisbury Fire Department is collecting donations for the Helping Hands food bank.

“We started it last year because of the need with Helping Hands being short approximately 150 turkeys. We decided to help them out with a turkey drive, and we ended up actually collecting a little over 300 turkeys,” Captain Brad Doucette told our newsroom.

Their goal for this year is 200 turkeys by Saturday, December 13.

“We will be collecting turkeys every day between now and Saturday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. We’ll also be around on Saturday, from 9 am until the parade at 6 pm,” Doucette added.

He said they’ll even collect the turkeys, hams or non-perishable food items along the parade route if you have something to give.

Your donations can be dropped off at the new fire station on Main Street in Salisbury.

“If they want to contribute to the turkey dinner itself with cranberries or gravy or stuffing and others like that, we’re more than happy to accept that for the food bank,” Doucette stressed.

Monetary donations are also an option, and they’ll give you a receipt if required.

“Last year, we had quite a few kids who were glad to help with making donations and wanted to help those in need. It really warms the heart. They want to make sure that Santa sees that they’re being good and giving back to the community,” Doucette said.
