RCMP warns New Brunswickers of cryptocurrency scams

Fraudsters are posing as government officials to push fake cryptocurrency investments in New Brunswick, and the RCMP is warning residents not to be fooled by the schemes.

Police explained that scammers are using false endorsements and links that appear legitimate to convince people to put money into digital currency.

The RCMP said residents should not click on links in unsolicited emails, text messages or social media posts that claim to promote investment opportunities.

“Verifying sources before making any financial commitments has never been more important,” the RCMP said in the release.

Police advised people to confirm any investment suggestion by checking official government websites or contacting agencies directly.

They also recommended avoiding suspicious links, conducting thorough research and consulting a certified financial advisor.

Mounties also noted that cryptocurrency investments carry a higher risk of losing money, even through legitimate platforms, because banks and brokerages are not involved.

More information on how to protect against investment fraud is available through the federal government’s website.
