N.B. man climbing to 17,500 feet for charity

A Dieppe man is using one of his passions to raise money for Breakfast Clubs of Canada.

Adventure enthusiast Mathieu McCaie began his trek to the Mount Everest base camp in Nepal on Tuesday, “The biggest challenge will be the altitude. Living at sea level, we start our trek at 11,000 feet and we’re going up to 17,500 feet.”

He expects it’ll take around seven days going up to basecamp, and four days to come back down.

It also took some intense training, but McCaie says he didn’t really do anything differently, “I just kept up with my regular training, I’m a runner, but I do CrossFit and Karate. I just kept my active stuff with some extra hiking in there.”

His trip came with a long list of items to take with him, including multiple layers for dealing with the cold, sleeping bags and other gear to help them deal with any rain they get, “We have to be ready for every element,” McCaie adds.

This trip has been in the works for around five years, but COVID-19 stalled his plans.

His hope is to raise $15,000 for the Breakfast Club of Canada, an organization that he loves dearly because it helps kids have a full stomach to go to school to be able to learn.

McCaie is travelling with friends from Toronto and another from Calgary.
