Celebrations for PRIDE have been ongoing all week in Greater Moncton.
Thousands are expected in the downtown on Saturday afternoon.
River of Pride Vice President Justin Durette says rainbow colours will be prominent for the annual PRIDE parade.
“Last year was our biggest parade held in New Brunswick. This year is topping last year. We have seen so much growth,” Durette stated proudly.
He says more groups are represented in the parade for 2023, which starts at Foundry Street and continues on Main to Moncton City Hall.
The parade will be followed by a concert in Riverfront Park.
“Being able to welcome the RCMP Pipes and Drums this year. That’s a first in the maritime provinces. We have many wanting to really ensure equality and inclusion,” Durette says.
Thousands come from all across the Maritimes and Quebec for PRIDE events and activities in Greater Moncton.
“PRIDE is extremely important to us and to ensure the representation is there, especially with everything that we’ve seen that’s been going on. In the US laws and politics, a lot of the rights are taken away now and we’ve been seeing it happening across Canada as well, especially in New Brunswick with Policy 713, and with some other aspects. We still see discrimination in some areas, and it’s extremely important that we ensure there are safe spaces in the communities, safe spaces for gathering, safe spaces for socials and to ensure that we’re promoting equity, equality and inclusion in our communities,” Durette adds.
He expects large crowds will be lining the streets, showing their support for the River of Pride and the 2SLGBTQIA community.
