Moncton Fire battles separate blazes in duplex and boarded up building

A busy night for fires in the Moncton area.

Moncton Fire was dispatched to a duplex on Brookside Drive at around 7 pm Wednesday..

Platoon Chief Mike Lake says it was in the basement of the duplex.

Residents in the other units escaped safely and firefighters got the blaze knocked down quickly.

There’s extensive water, smoke and fire damage to the basement unit.

There was a second fire at around 1 am Thursday, in a building along the Petitcodiac River, near downtown Moncton.

Platoon Chief Lake says he could see flames as high as 30 feet behind the Running Room.

This was in a boarded-up building along the riverfront trail.

Lake says it took a lot of water and time to extinguish.

A thorough search of the building was done, but Lake says there didn’t appear to be anyone inside.

Just the shell of the building remains.

A further search will be done today as a part of the investigation into the cause.
