The Town of Riverview is reporting a significant increase in building permits so far this year.
A total of 115 building permits worth more than $52 million had been granted as of the end of July.
Building permits are up 37 per cent and the value of those permits has more than doubled compared to the same period in 2023.
The town reported a total building permit value of $33 million for 2023, but Riverview has already exceeded this amount in just seven months of 2024.
Residential projects have been the primary force behind the building activity, with 281 new housing units receiving permits in the first two quarters of 2024.
This includes 206 multi-unit dwellings, 30 semi-detached dwellings and duplexes, 19 single-unit dwellings, 17 accessory unit dwellings, eight town and row houses and one mini home.
Mayor Andrew LeBlanc said the critical need for all housing types in Riverview shows the town is a highly sought-after community to call home.
“These developments showcase the strength of the local market in supporting our growing population’s infrastructure needs. Seeing the building permit valuations double compared to this time last year is a testament to the community strength and engagement that is fostered here in Riverview,” said LeBlanc.
Town officials said the resident profile is evolving and now includes more newcomer families, senior residents, and millennial first-time homebuyers.
Kirk Brewer, the town’s senior planner, said these development trends will help inform the future vision for development as the municipal plan and zoning bylaw are currently being updated.
Construction is projected to expand in various sectors for the rest of the year due to the rising housing demand, said the town.
