Newcomer family to move into Habitat for Humanity home in Moncton

A Moncton family now has a place to call their own, thanks to Habitat for Humanity New Brunswick.

The four-bedroom bungalow is located on Churchill Street. It has been under construction since late last year.

Habitat for Humanity CEO Perry Kendall says the family moved to Canada around two years ago, “Kenny and Phillip and their three children, are permanent residents of Canada who are both working in the Moncton area.”

The family moved to New Brunswick from Nigeria around two years ago.

Families are chosen based on specific criteria and must apply to qualify for a Habitat for Humanity home.

“Once we have confirmed a project is moving ahead, we open up for applications. The application has three key areas, that the family is living in a situation of need. For example, their current home is unaffordable, unsafe or inappropriate for their family, and often it’s a combination of all three,” Kendall says.

“They have to have a stable earned income and a reasonable debt level and good credit history. They also have to fall into what we call a lower income bracket. Families also have to be willing to partner with Habitat for Humanity. The largest part of that is around 500 hours of volunteer time, not just with Habitat for Humanity. It can be with other volunteer organizations as well.”

The plans for this bungalow began after the vacant lot on Churchill Street was donated by a private donor. This family are expected to move into their new home in around two weeks.

Kendall says Habitat for Humanity New Brunswick currently has 13 homes in the Greater Moncton area and 88 across the province.
