UPDATE: Boat in Pointe-de-Chene destroyed by fire

A man reportedly suffered burns after an explosion onboard a boat in the Pointe-du-Chene wharf.

The boat then erupted into flames on Sunday afternoon and plumes of black smoke could be seen from kilometres away.

Witnesses say things could have been a lot worse if civilians didn’t quickly jump into action. They managed to tow the boat away from the wharf and other boats before the Shefdiac Fire Department arrived.

“The boat was offshore and burned until the tide came up and the boat floated into breakwater where we were able to access it and extinguish it,” says Shediac Fire Department Deputy Chief Julien Boudeau.

He adds the man who was injured was treated by firefighters for burns and transported to hospital by Ambulance New Brunswick.

The Shediac Fire Department was on scene until around 5:10 p.m.

The RCMP and Canadian Coast Guard also responded.
