Mandatory training for new N.B. transport truck drivers

Mandatory training is being introduced for new transport truck drivers in New Brunswick.

New Brunswick will become the eighth province or territory to implement mandatory training.

Training programs are available at several institutions throughout the province.

It will include in-class instruction, in-yard instruction, and in-cab or on-the-road training.

“Mandatory training will ensure new commercial truck drivers possess the basic knowledge and driving skills to help improve highway safety for all New Brunswickers,” Public Safety Minister Kris Austin said in a news release.

Department officials said the initiative adopts training standards consistent with the National Safety Code, ensuring New Brunswick truckers receive the same instruction as those elsewhere in Canada.

Current Class 1 licence holders will be exempted from the new requirement and will not have to take the training.

Officials said the new requirement will take effect on April 1.
