Moncton man jailed for copper wire thefts

A 37-year-old Moncton man has been sentenced to two years in jail following multiple cases involving thefts of copper wire in Greater Moncton.

Codiac RCMP received a call last July about two people underneath the Gunningsville Bridge who were suspected to be stripping copper wire.

When police arrived, officers found all of the copper wire had been stripped from underneath the bridge and the bridge lights were no longer functioning.

A 43-year-old woman was arrested at the scene and later released while a second individual had fled the scene.

The damage was estimated at $80,000.

A 37-year-old man turned himself in to police in October related to the incident as well as other outstanding matters.

On March 24, Daniel James Densmore was charged with mischief over $5,000.

He was subsequently sentenced to 12 months in jail in relation to the theft of copper wire from the Gunningsville Bridge.

He was sentenced to an additional 12 months in jail in relation to other charges regarding similar copper thefts.

RCMP say there have been a number of copper wire thefts in New Brunswick recently causing losses to businesses, homes and government departments.

Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity near an electrical substation or power poles is asked to contact their local police department.
