The province says extreme weather and winter shelters in the province will close in the coming weeks.
In a statement from Social Development, the province says it is pleased with the services and efforts provided so far this winter.
But Rebecca Howland adds the plan is to phase out these temporary facilities in the coming weeks and redirect clients to available resources at existing shelters.
“Going forward, the province will continue to work with its partners in all regions to ensure the best approaches to address the needs of individuals experiencing homelessness. These shelters were meant to be temporary as additional support during the winter months,” Howland says.
No set date of closure was given.
There are currently nine permanent emergency shelters in the province providing a total of 274 beds.
