New Brunswickers still have a few weeks left to go ice-fishing, but the deadline to remove shelters is fast approaching.
On Wednesday, the province announced that all shelters must be removed from provincial waterways by March 15.
“As we are headed towards spring, it is important to be cautious and not wait until it is too late to remove ice-fishing shelters,” Environment Minister Gary Crossman said in a news release.
“If not cleared, the structures are bound to end up in the river or lake after spring melt and nobody wants that.”
Shelter owners are also responsible for removing all garbage and debris from their site, according to the province.
Signs are posted at popular ice-fishing sites, reminding shelter owners to respect regulations and to properly maintain their shelters.
Ice-fishing season in New Brunswick is open until March 31.
