The theft of catalytic converters from vehicles continues to be a problem in Greater Moncton.
Codiac RCMP Inspector Chantal Farrah told City Council that a public tip recently led them to Collishaw Street.
“We saw a person under a cube van attempting to steal or grind off a catalytic converter. We had members there within a few minutes and we caught the person actually committing the crime.”
Farrah said the man was arrested and later released with a court date in May.
She reminded residents to call police if they see anything suspicious.
“We need everyone’s eyes out there so that when you see something that looks out of the ordinary, report it immediately.”
Moncton Headstart and daycares have also become recent victims of catalytic converter thefts.

Acting city manager Nick Robichaud told Council that the city has been working with RCMP and the province seeking changes to the Salvage Dealers Act to cut down on this type of crime.
Catalytic converters contain valuable metals such as platinum, palladium and rhodium which have soared in price in recent years making them a target for thieves.
