Big Expense For Small Business, Says Moncton Daycare Owner

Another Mountain Road daycare bus in Moncton has lost its catalytic converter.

Thieves struck on Tuesday night, at Home With a Heart Daycare.

A bus at Moncton Headstart, which is also located on Mountain Road, had the catalytic converter cut off sometime throughout the night between Tuesday and Wednesday morning.

This has left Home With a Heart Owner Janice Sutherland frustrated, “We are all small businesses and we’re trying to run in this difficult time with inflation. These are children, these are daycare centers. We’re not big business.”

She says the bus was parked where it always is, right in front of their centre, “We always park it right in front of the daycare because we’re right beside seniors home, and we’re right on Mountain Road. We figured it was safe there because it’s very open.”

Sutherland adds they’ve been fortunate because this is the first time the catalytic converter has been stolen from their bus. She’s heard that others on Mountain Road, aside from Moncton Headstart have been hit several times before.

“This is a big expense for a small business. I’m thinking between $2500 and $3000,” Sutherland says.

The theft was reported to RCMP. Currently, Sutherland doesn’t have cameras outside her daycare, but she is now considering having them installed.
