Extensive Damage To Riverview Apartment After Fire

Fire has destroyed a unit in an apartment building on Coverdale Road in Riverview.

Riverview Fire and Rescue arrived on the scene just after 4 pm Sunday afternoon.

When firefighters arrived, RCMP officers were evacuating residents from the building.

Firefighters located the fire and quickly extinguished it, but Deputy Fire Chief John Malloy says the one unit is a total loss.

There is water and smoke damage to other apartments in the building.

A cat was lost in the fire, but no one else was hurt.

Canadian Red Cross volunteers have arranged emergency lodging and meals for about 20 people. Other tenants arranged to stay with relatives or friends pending cleanup and repairs.

Twenty-nine firefighters battled the blaze, along with assistance at the scene from the Moncton Fire Department, Ambulance NB and Codiac RCMP.

A Codiac Transpo also kept evacuated residents warm.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
