Poppies are now a common sight as Remembrance Day nears.
The campaign kicked off last week.
But First Vice-President for the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #6 Moncton Peter Beers says more volunteers are needed, “A lot of people are very easy to come out and some are not because they’re worried about COVID. In some locations, we don’t have anyone yet.”
The poppy campaign slowed over the past two years due to the pandemic.
Beers is hopeful this year, with a goal of $100, 000 in the campaign for Legion Branch #6.
Poppies are not purchased, anyone can have one, but a donation is always encouraged.
Funds assist those veterans who are struggling, “If veterans need medication, or need housing for rent or to buy groceries or to pay their power bill. We also help the homeless, through the homeless vet program. We also give out bursaries for students who are going to College,” Beers says.
If you don’t have any cash on hand for a poppy, Beers says they also have tap-and-go boxes, so donors can use their debit card to make a donation.
“You should wear a poppy for those veterans who have sacrificed their lives to give us freedom. These veterans are not forgotten,” Beers adds.
A reminder from Beers, “Always wear your poppy on the left side over your heart.”
Remembrance Day is November 11th.
