Quick action helped to prevent more severe damage after a fire broke out in a Dieppe home.
Fire Chief Marc Cormier says someone walking by the Thomas Street residence at around 7:15 pm Wednesday night, heard a fire alarm, saw smoke, then called 911.
Around 15 firefighters assisted in containing the flames to one room.
No one was in the residence at the time, but a pet rabbit was rescued by firefighters.
Paramedics from ANB, Codiac RCMP and City of Dieppe public works employees also assisted in the operations.
Thomas Street was closed and traffic was diverted for around two hours.
A fire investigator will determine the origin and cause.
Cormier adds, with this being Fire Prevention Week, this is a great reminder for homeowners to have working smoke alarms on every floor and in every bedroom of their home.
The working smoke alarms in this case alerted a passerby who in turn called 9-1-1. Those actions allowed the fire department to respond quickly.
The fire department also recommends taking the time to prepare and practice a fire escape plan with the members of your household regularly.
