Having a home fire escape plan is something that is considered essential by many first responders.
That is why Fire Prevention Week this year is all about the importance of having an escape plan.
Running from Oct. 9 to 15, the theme for the week is, “Fire won’t wait. Plan an escape.”
Officials say there are several things to keep in mind when developing and practicing a home fire escape plan.
You should draw a map of your home with all members of your household, marking two exits from each room and a path to the outside from each exit.
All members of your household should practice your home fire drill at least twice a year, including once at night.
Children should be taught how to escape on their own in case an adult cannot help them out. There should also be a designated meeting place outside of the home.
You should also ensure the number of your home is clearly marked and easy for first responders to find.
