Update Sought On Efforts To Crack Down On Drug Use

A Moncton city councillor is seeking an update on police efforts to crack down on drug use in the community.

Charles Leger said we’re not hearing a lot about any success stories on our streets lately.

“We do a lot with respect to trying to address homelessness, trying to address housing and all of those things. The root cause really is in and around the addiction piece.”

Leger told Codiac RCMP that he’s concerned about what he has seen and heard in the community.

“When you see people blatantly using drugs on street corners and openly selling drugs in front of the Moncton Hospital or in front of the Georges Dumont and staff report it and others report it, I have a hard time trying to understand.”

Leger said we’ll never get ahead of the problem if we don’t know what is happening.

Interim superintendent Ben Jolette said he tries to report about victories or results to city council and will provide an update at the next regular meeting.
