Vandals Repeatedly Target Sites In Riverview

The Rebecca Schofield Play Park in Riverview continues to be a target for vandalism.

Town Council postponed making a decision about funding security at the site until next month.

The Frank L. Bowser Home and School Association had asked the Town to pay $2,000 toward the cost of hiring a private security company to patrol the playground.

Riverview Mayor Andrew LeBlanc says since the site is not municipally-owned, this wasn’t the town’s first course of action.

“Council’s view on it was we want to have a meeting with the RCMP and some community stakeholders like the school, the home and school association and neighborhood watch and talk about all the different options that are on the table before we commit to this one in particular.”

LeBlanc says members of council will be meeting with those groups shortly.

Meantime, vandals have once again targeted the town’s Christmas Lights display along the riverfront.

LeBlanc says police are investigating the theft of copper wire from the site.

“Gauging the public response, it’s frustrating for our residents, it’s frustrating for us with the municipality as well. So it’s disheartening for sure,” the mayor added.
