Every year, yoga classes at Riverview High School support a charity of choice.
After a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19, they are holding their Royal Road for Kids event for Ukrainian families that have fled the war.
Grade 12 student Gillian Davidson says classmates voted to decide on a cause, “I can’t fathom what those people are going through. If there is anything I can do to help them I will do that, no hesitation because it is a tragedy what they are going through.”
The event will be held June 9th at Caseley Park from 1:30-3:30 PM and will feature live music, games, a silent auction and other activities. The Ukrainian Club of Moncton will also be on site.
Their goal is to raise $5,000.
“I have always grown up watching my father do volunteer work,” said Grade 11 student Cadence Bron. “When I was in grade 5, I raised $700 for an event when the Syrians came to Moncton. It very much reminds me of what the Syrians went through. The fact that we have to go through this again, I’m hoping this time we’ll be a little more prepared. I think after watching all the Syrians, we have to do a bit better and make sure we have the support.”
The Royal Road for Kids event was started ten years ago by a teacher, but it is primarily student-led.
There are 60 students involved this year, and this component of the class teaches them about philosophy and being kind, along with the values of helping people.
