A grass fire on the marsh along the Riverfront trail spread quickly due to very dry conditions.
Moncton Fire Acting Platoon Chief Jamie Rooney says firefighters arrived on scene at around 4pm Sunday afternoon.
He says high winds also helped fuel the flames. Smoke could be seen from kilometres away.
Firefighters were on scene for around two and a half hours as they tried to get the fire under control.
There is a homeless encampment nearby, but Rooney says they’re unsure at this point as to whether that played a factor or not into the cause.
The southeast part of the province is currently under a fire ban and Rooney says no burning is permitted at the this time including in firepits.
