Slow But Steady Business Growth In Metro Moncton

The Moncton census metropolitan area (CMA) had more active businesses in January 2022 than it did before the pandemic started according to Statistics Canada.

The number of businesses climbed to 3,979 in the first month of this year – the most recent with data.

Just prior to the pandemic in February 2020, there were 3,882 businesses open.

By May 2020, the number of businesses had fallen by about 10 percent compared to the pre-COVID era.

In April 2020, 417 businesses closed which was the largest number during the pandemic.

However, the active businesses total began climbing by June 2020 and continued to rise slowly except for a brief drop in September 2021.

Also starting in June 2020, more businesses opened than closed in each month except for August and September 2021.
