Slo-pitch is alive and well in Greater Moncton, and the season hasn’t even started yet.
The Hub City Slo-Pitch league already has all of the teams they can handle based on available fields.
President Bernie Melanson says they have 84 teams registered this year in Men’s, Masters and Co-ed.
“We figure there are around 1300 players, that’s just the teams that play leagues,” notes Melanson. “There are also tournaments, so you’ll get some overlap there, but it is growing every year. There are people who are constantly posting on the website to try and get in and looking for a team to play on, and then there are people who are moving into the Moncton area.”
Melanson is optimistic that the season can start in May despite the winter that was.
This year the league found out that one of the fields they normally use is being converted to a baseball field.
“We typically deal with the City of Moncton, but I have reached out to both the Town of Riverview and the City of Dieppe with the hopes of getting a couple of extra fields that will help us, so we are waiting to hear back in the next couple of weeks,” Melanson added.
The league also likes to give back to the community, by hosting the draft tournament that gives money to both minor ball and Youth Fast Pitch, as well as the Fall Classic.
Playoffs start in September and Melanson says they are usually off the fields by the first week of October.
