The mayor of Sackville says he’s pleased with the three options put forward to repair the Chignecto Isthmus linking New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
Up to $300 million will be needed to fix the vital trade corridor which is being threatened by rising sea levels caused by climate change.
Shawn Mesheau likes that the study focused on enhancing existing dike infrastructure rather than building a new bridge for example.
The mayor is also concerned about another issue in his town connected to the dikes.
He says a major aboiteaux has played a role in freshwater flooding in the area for several years now.
“The town has been working on several phases for water mitigation and dealing with how we can hold that water and get it out into the Tantramar River when the tide is out so that it doesn’t create the flooding that it has in the past.”
Mesheau is hoping the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure will put some funding behind it.
A study recently identified three options to repair problems along the Chignecto Isthmus which include raising the existing dikes, building new ones or adding steel walls to the current dike system.
