Elections NB is recruiting Municipal Returning Officers.
Chief Electoral Officer Kim Poffenroth says 17 positions need to be filled, “Training will take place in August and returning offices will open in early October. Anyone who is interested in this position, it is going to be intensive work from at least August until just before Christmas.”
Municipal elections will be held in some communities in November as a result of local governance reform. It will overhaul electoral boundaries, election systems and services.
“Returning officers are responsible for hiring staff in returning offices and polling locations. They are responsible for finding polling locations and making sure their staff are trained. So it is a big job. Having some background in managing people, managing projects and budgets. Good interpersonal skills, because you’ll be dealing with candidates and staff. A lot of responsibility,” Poffenroth says.
She adds as elections are held in November, Returning Officers could be re-engaged for further by-elections in the Spring, of 2023, “There is definitely periods of downtime, along with periods of more intensive work.”
