The province is offering virtual courses for anyone training to become a volunteer firefighter.
Almost 5,000 volunteer firefighters work in New Brunswick covering 90 per cent of the province’s area.
Online learning is now available along with in-person practical sessions which the province said will give candidates better access to meeting the requirements of being a volunteer firefighter.
“Every time a firefighter gets a call, they are going to somebody’s worst day,” said provincial fire marshal Michael Lewis. “Our volunteers stop what they are doing and rush to help those who need it most in their communities. They use their skills to save, protect and help, and for many, it becomes a lifelong passion. Becoming a volunteer firefighter can be a life-changing experience.”
A certified volunteer firefighter in New Brunswick requires 150 hours of training.
Volunteers responded to over 20,000 calls last year ranging from house fires, collisions, wildfires and medical assistance.
