The skies may have been bumpy overall but the Greater Moncton Roméo LeBlanc International Airport (YQM) did have a banner year for volume of cargo.
Flights to Iceland and Asia did stop in August due to pandemic activity although the airport CEO says Asian flights have resumed this month.
Bernard LeBlanc says passenger numbers climbed in 2021 but are still nowhere near pre-COVID levels.
YQM is forecast to have more than 182,000 passengers this year which is actually lower than 2020.
LeBlanc adds 2020 had almost three months with strong passenger numbers prior to when COVID hit.
Some routes were cut last year including Air Canada to Halifax and Ottawa.
But he notes PAL Airlines began flights to both cities along with Deer Lake, Wabush and St. John’s, Newfoundland.
The airport doesn’t expect to return to pre-COVID passenger levels until at least 2024.
