Early Saturday afternoon, the Horizon Health Network announced the emergency department at the Sackville Memorial Hospital would be temporarily closed and it would reopen on Sunday at 8 a.m.
The regional health authority said this was due to a sudden unavailability of physicians and nurses.
All patients and clients requiring urgent medical care were told to seek treatment at another hospital and ambulances would be diverted elsewhere.
Last month, Horizon announced the emergency department would be closed overnight and the new hours would be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week.
