Codiac RCMP wants to be prepared for a potential influx of individuals in Moncton’s downtown core next spring.
City councillors told Mounties they continue hearing about problems downtown related to homelessness and petty crimes.
Acting superintendent Ron DaSilva mentioned to council that officers are now working with community groups on planning for the warmer months.
DaSilva said the changing of seasons will likely mean a decrease in activity over the winter.
Moncton deputy mayor Charles Leger said he hears from a lot of residents who are worried about their own safety while downtown.
“There are a lot of people really struggling whether they have bipolar disorder or they are paranoid schizophrenic or whether they are on drugs. Some are violent and some are very agitated,” noted Leger.
DaSilva encouraged councillors and residents to continue reporting any issues of concern in the downtown or elsewhere.
He added having data from the public is the driving force behind moving resources to certain locations where needed.
