DEC Votes For School Name Change To Be Revisited

A name change for JMA Armstrong and Salisbury Middle School will be revisited.

A motion put forth by Anglophone East District Education Council member Alex Morton during last night’s meeting passed unanimously…

He says this issue escalated quickly in the community and on social media, “I have responded to over 90 emails. I got some phone calls. I got a petition delivered to my door with over 1500 signatures asking to revisit the name change.”

Morton says the community does not feel as it they were included in the discussion, “The community does not feel that they were involved adequately. The policy was followed, Policy 409 with community members. But there is a large portion of the population, clearly, Salisbury isn’t that big a place and there are a lot of names and signatures. They don’t feel as though they’ve been consulted. As a District Education Council, part of our job is to make sure the community is heard.”

The school district says the name changing process began in 2019 and involved the school’s parents school support committee and members of the District Education Council.
