Downtown Locksmith Says Rise In Break-Ins Concerning

A local Locksmith wants the Mayors of the Tri-communities to step up and do something about increased vandalism and crime in the downtown.

Maryse Carey is the Office Manager at Carey My Keys.

She says in the past year, they have seen a spike, “Break and enters, thieves are prying the latches on the building to get in. A lot of the washer and dryer coin boxes are being drilled or manipulated to steal the money. People are setting up comp in the vestibules. Firefighters have a box on apartment buildings, which contains a master key if they need to get in, those have been stolen. Thieves are trying to get into the electrical rooms to steal the copper wire.”

She sent a letter to the three Mayors, of Moncton, Riverview and Dieppe last Monday, but Carey says she has yet to hear a response from any of them.

Carey could like to see a committee formed, “With business owners, and with residents that are scared to go outside, maybe we can get together and maybe bring some suggestions to the city and hopefully find a way to try and resolve this issue.”

She says being a part of a security business for the past 11 years, she cares a lot about the other businesses that are downtown as well, “Being a business that serves the tri-cities, we see this trickling down into Dieppe and into Riverview. Moncton is definitely the bigger source of the problem, but it is already starting to trickle down into the other cities.”
