Property crimes continue to be a problem in the tri-communities according to the acting superintendent of Codiac RCMP.
Ron DeSilva told Moncton City Council on Monday that a couple of items tend to be popular with criminals.
“The theft of catalytic converters, copper and other various items are the ones that are actually pushing the numbers up.”
DeSilva said many of the stolen catalytic converters are being sold to recycling companies both here and elsewhere.
He is urging residents to report these thefts so police can use the data to target the criminals or groups doing it.
According to DeSilva, criminal analysts are working with investigators of the Codiac crime reduction unit and other such units outside the city to try and reduce these crimes.
The Mounties plan to launch an upcoming social media awareness campaign which will highlight small things that people can do to avoid property crime such as locking your car doors.
DeSilva said would-be criminals look for easy opportunities.
“Just a theft from vehicles is one example. An individual can walk up a short street and steal stuff or try to enter at least dozen cars within minutes which creates 12 or more occurrences for us.”
