‘Something Is Going On’: Fire Destroys Another Smokehouse

After a third smokehouse was burned to ashes in as many weeks, the chief of the Cap-Pele Fire Department is concerned.

“Something’s going on, but I’m unsure what,” said Ronald Cormier following a Saturday morning blaze on Route 950 in Cap-Petit.

The Cap-Pele Fire Department received a call about the fire at 5:35 a.m. and arrived on scene to a building fully engulfed in smoke, said Cormier. The fire chief says the priority was to save nearby buildings from being affected.

Crews from Dieppe, Moncton, Port Elgin, Shediac, Sackville, and Haute-Aboujagane attended the incident.

Nobody was injured by the blaze, but the smokehouse was “totally destroyed,” according to Cormier.

The facility is property of M & M Cormier Fisheries, according to a social media post by the Chambre de commerce Cap-Pelé/Beaubassin-est. Similar fires wrecked two smokehouses owned by Botsford Fisheries earlier this month.

Cormier expressed concern over the third smokehouse fire in three weeks, adding the community has a right to be concerned as well.

The Fire Marshal and level 1 investigators are investigating the cause of the blaze, according to New Brunswick RCMP Sgt. Pierre Chiasson.

He encourages anyone with information on the fires to come forward, adding the public usually does not report small details, but they can often be part of solving the puzzle.

Any information should be directed towards your local detachment or through Crime Stoppers.
