A natural gas leak in downtown Moncton confined residents to their homes for about an hour on Tuesday afternoon.
The Moncton Fire Department responded to the leak outside of 35 Bonaccord Street at 1:20 p.m., according to Platoon Chief Brian McDonald.
He said a construction team in the area hit a gas line while working on the road, but it was only damaged and not severed. Liberty Utilities responded to the incident and clamped the valve shut after approximately an hour of work.
During the leak, natural gas vented into the atmosphere forcing the area to be sheltered in place. McDonald said they asked residents to remain inside, close any windows and turn off their air conditioners.
The incident did not cause any injuries, and the damage did not present any opportunity for an explosion.
Liberty Utilities remained on the scene after the incident to repair the line.
