Moncton Discourages Canada Geese From Nesting

Canada Geese are starting to become a problem in some of Moncton’s parks and are creating conflicts with trail users.

Jones Lake and Centennial Park are two popular gathering spots for geese.

Moncton Parks Department operations director Dan Hicks says Canada Geese are most active in the spring when nesting and trying to raise their young.

Hicks says one of the measures the city is using to discourage the geese is fencing which will block areas where they would have ready access to water.

“Another method involves the use of low-powered lights that flash at night. This makes it difficult for the geese to get a good night’s sleep.”

Hicks adds these methods are hardly innovative and municipalities across the country use them to deter Canada Geese.

In the spring near Jones Lake, it is quite common to see Canada Geese and goslings crossing West Main Street and disrupting the flow of traffic.
