With a rise in domestic violence during the pandemic, organizations like Beausejour Family Resource Crisis Centre have seen an increase in the need for services.
CEO Kristal Leblanc says that makes the upcoming Run for Women even more important this year, “Being part of that solution, showing that you are an ally, because you just don’t really know who in your life and relationships, are experiencing domestic violence. They need to know you are a safe person to talk to and you will understand, you will believe and you will accept them.”
The run, being held July 4 to 11th is virtual again this year.
Leblanc says, “We are also dealing with funding cuts due to a lack of our ability to do fundraising efforts. On top of that, looking at how we you going to recover for year two and year three, when that surge continues.”
The Virtual Run for Women 2021 represents the only major fundraising event for the Centre, to attempt to meet the increasing demand for service as a result of the
COVID-19. “We have seen at least a 20% increase for demand for services, and they are continually climbing” Leblanc says.
The money raised is a great help for the Centre, but the runs helps participants as well, “$35 for registration goes directly to our organization, so that we can meet that demand in Southeast New Brunswick. What is amazing is because it is virtual you can be from anywhere. You can just select the Moncton event and then we receive the funds. We want people to know that they need to get out for their mental health, Leblanc says.”
