Pumpkins are a popular fixture on Halloween, but many of them end up in the garbage afterwards.
Kavanagh Farms asks that you consider donating to them instead.
Charlene Kavanagh owns the farm in Shediac Cape with her husband Jim.
Last year they went door to door collecting around 250 pumpkins, to feed to the many animals they have, that includes goats, sheep, pigs, chickens, ducks and other animals.
“I was doing some research and pumpkin is actually a natural dewormer. So, it was a win win for us. We are looking for clean, old pumpkins. We like the ones that aren’t;t carved. They can’t have paint or wax on them. We feed them to our critters,” Kavanagh says.
She says they have to do things a bit differently this year and will choose locations in Moncton, Dieppe and Riverview where the pumpkins can be dropped off on November 7th.
“I would like to beat our 250. If we beat that we’ll freeze a lot. I also share with a number of other local farmers who don’t go out and collect pumpkins,” Kavanagh says.
Kavanagh says for more information on how to donate or to arrange a Farm tour, you should reach out directly on Facebook or at 506-878-8281.
She adds, they are also hoping to collect gloves for Reconnect this year.
Kavanagh says they also collect Christmas trees after the festive season as well.
