Help Needed For Tenants Displaced By Dieppe Apartment Fire

Donations are needed for the victims of a recent apartment building fire on Gauvin Road in Dieppe..

Around 50 tenants were left displaced after the fire broke on Saturday night.

Community Officer with the City of Dieppe Gabrielle Maillet says those in need include both adults and children, and a variety of items are needed.

Monetary donations or gift certificates (restaurants, groceries, etc.)
Women’s, men’s and children’s clothing
Shoes and boots
Snowsuits, toques, mittens, gloves
Sheets and blankets
Towels
Furniture (sofas, tables, chairs, lamps, desks)
Utensils, dishes, pots and pans
Toiletries (shampoo, soap, toothpaste, etc.)

Maillet says, “We haven’t really received a list of the families and the ages, but we are taking anything that is gently or slightly used.”

Items can be dropped off at the Club d’age d’or seniors Centre on Acadie Avenue..

Drop-off schedule:
Sunday, September 27 – 6 to 8 p.m.
Tuesday, September 29 – 1 to 3 p.m.
Thursday, October 1 – 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Sunday, October 4 – 6 to 8 p.m.

Maillet says the city can’t take the credit for putting together this donation drive…

“A group of really caring and innovative citizens who wanted to help. We just did what we do best. We just helped out with some logistics and connecting people together,” Mallet says.

Many of the residents are also still looking for another place to live.

Maillet says, a lot of the units in the building had three bedrooms. “From what I am hearing, there’s not a lot of availability for apartments that want children or have more than one or two bedrooms. Anyone who has a building or a room for these people, contact the City of Dieppe and we can try to help. There are already a lot of building owners who have stepped up and are trying to work together to get these tenants a place to live as quickly as possible.”
