Provincial Leaders Meeting Today To Discuss Premier’s Proposal

The Provincial party leaders are expected to meet today, to discuss the Premier’s proposal to postpone an election call.

Liberal leader Kevin Vickers says he is prepared to attend the preliminary meeting, while keeping an open mind, and participating in the discussions in good faith.

He will be looking for some clarification of some of the items outlined in the proposal.

Vickers says the ongoing health and safety of New Brunswickers during the pandemic, must be a priority.

He adds, the calling of two by-elections that have been without representation for so long, and a focus on economic recovery are also important.

Vickers adds, the safe reopening of schools must also be a priority.

Premier Blaine Higgs proposed a deal earlier this week to the three opposition parties, asking them to sign an agreement not to trigger an election before 2022 or until the pandemic is over.

Meantime, Green Party Leader David Coon says he looks forward to a commitment from the Premier to collaborate on provincial budgets and throne speeches.

This in an effort to secure the confidence of the house to avoid triggering an election.
