Albert County Museum Celebrates 100th Anniversary Of WWI Cannons

The Albert County Musem is highlighting an important milestone this weekend.

A special re-dedication ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Albert County Museum for two very significant cannons from World War One.

Chair of the Albert County 175 celebration, Stuart Liptay says one of them is considered to be the most storied gun in Canadian history, with a well-documented capture from the enemy at Vimy Ridge.

Liptay says not only was it was captured from the enemy, but it was used against them.

The Krupp 10cm K14 cannon was won by Albert County 100 years ago, in the 1919 Victory Loans Campaign.

“The government decided to award each province one of these war trophy guns. The district that raised the most money over the goals, on a percentage basis, was going to be the winner. We managed to raise over three times the goal and so we were awarded this gun,” Liptay says.

Little is know about the other cannon, a 7.7cm 96 Field Gun, but it was awarded to the county in 1920, in recognition of those who fought during the Great War and for having the highest enlistment per capita.

The cannons recently underwent a 5-year restoration project, including new wheels and paint job.

This weekend’s event will be live-streamed on the museum’s Facebook page and will feature a simulated firing with the help of modern pyrotechnics.

The 100th anniversary of the arrival of the arrival of the guns to Hopewell Cape happens is also part of the year-long celebration of the 175th anniversary of the founding of Albert County.
