Improperly Discarded Cigarettes Often To Blame For Fires During Dry Conditions

Dry conditions in the region can mean in increase in fires.

The Moncton Fire Department responded to numerous calls last week, due to reported grass, forest and even deck fires.

Division Chief of Fire Prevention and Investigation Charles Leblanc says improperly discarded cigarettes are often to blame, “If someone is driving down the road and they discard their cigarette butt through the window, there is a high probability right now, that it’ll likely catch fire.”

Leblanc says mulch fires are also a problem when it gets very dry.

“Anytime anyone sees any type of smoke coming up from anywhere, whether it is in a mulch bed or smoke coming out of a ditch, you should call 911 immediately,” Leblanc says.

He says everyone should be very aware, especially during times like this where it is so dry, because it doesn’t take much for a fire to start and get out of control.

Leblanc says when it comes to firepits, homeowners can have one in their backyard, as long as it meets City by-law requirements.

You must also remember to check the provincial forest fire index to ensure there isn’t a fire ban in effect. It is updated everyday at 2pm.
