First New Case Of COVID-19 In New Brunswick In 17 Days

New Brunswick’s chief medical officer is reporting one new case of COVID-19, the first since April 18th.

Dr. Jennifer Russell says the new case is an individual in their 30s who lives in the Fredericton area

She says this case is separate from the one identified from the April 27th WestJet flight and that the source of transmission is being investigated.

“Finding a new case is not a failure on anyone’s part, it means that our surveillance system is working and is is a sign of success. New cases will appear and, when they do, we will take the necessary steps to isolate them and track down those they have been in contact with,” Russell says.

Dr. Russell says the emergence of a new case was to be expected, given the prevalence of the virus in neighbouring provinces and states.

“The best measure of success is not an absence of new cases but how effectively we respond when new cases emerge. The only way we can find new cases is for as many people as possible to get tested,” she says.

Russell urged New Brunswickers to continue practicing physical distancing, wear a community face mask, maintain good hygiene and get tested if they have symptoms.
