Hundreds Dance And Celebrate Navratri In Moncton

A large crowd danced the night away in celebration at the Moncton Coliseum.

More than 800 people attended the first ever Navratri event held over two nights on September 30th, and October 1st in Moncton.

Organizer Ruchit Vachhrajani of Gujarati Samaj New Brunswick says participants came from areas across the province including Greater Moncton, Saint John, Fredericton, Woodstock, Miramichi and Florenceville.

Several dignitaries were also on hand, including Moncton Mayor Dawn Arnold, MLA Ernie Steeves, Dieppe Deputy Mayor Ernest Thibodeau, Riverview Councillor Sarah Murphy, Dieppe Councillor at large Melyssa Boudreau and Moncton Councillor at large Monique Leblanc.

Traditional costumes were worn as they danced for over six hours each night.

Navratri is an annual event held in India that attracts over 100, 000 people.

More than 400 families from Gujarati Samaj, India now call Greater Moncton home.
