UPDATE: Man Dies After ATV Falls Through Ice

One man has died and another was taken to hospital after an all-terrain vehicle fell through the ice on the Kennebecasis River.

Emergency crews were called to the scene near Clifton Royal on the Kingston Peninsula just before 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Kennebecasis Valley Fire Department deployed its crews from the Rothesay side of the river along Maliseet Drive.

Division Chief Shawn White said firefighters tracked the victims using a cellphone GPS and walked across the river.

White said one man had managed to climb out of the water and was found on a nearby ice shelf. He was hypothermic and taken to the hospital as a precaution.

He said the second man was located closer to Minister’s Face on Long Island and was pulled from the water by firefighters.

Mounties said the man, who they identified as a 58-year-old from Quispamsis, died from his injuries in hospital.

“The investigation is ongoing,” said the RCMP in a news release Sunday afternoon.

White said there is around 200 feet of open water in the river near Minister’s Face and asks people to steer clear of the area, especially at night.
