Moncton Public Library Addresses Period Poverty

The Moncton Public Library recently launched a new initiative to address period poverty within the community.

‘Period poverty’ is the lack of access to sanitary products, menstrual hygiene education, toilets, hand washing facilities, and, or, waste management.

The Moncton Public Library Board recently received a 4 thousand dollar cheque from Desjardins Insurance, as part of the Desjardins GoodSpark Community Grants Program.

Reference librarian at the Moncton Public Library, Karine Bourgeois says they will offer free menstrual products in their washrooms until funding runs out.

Bourgeois says a number of other libraries around the province have launched similar initiatives.

Bourgeois says studies show 1 in 3 Canadian women under the age of 25 have experienced period poverty.

She says they started putting out products last Wednesday and that about a hundred products have already been taken.
