The Executive Director of the Coalition for Seniors and Nursing Home Residents’ Rights is pleased to hear that changes will be made to help seniors transition out of the hospital.
Cecile Cassista says she met with Premier Blaine Higgs to voice concerns about the long-term care assessment process.
“I think the system we currently have is failing and has been failing for a long time,” she says.
Cassista believes nursing homes should be managed by the Department of Health, rather than Social Development.
She says nursing homes in all other provinces are under the jurisdiction of a health authority and that New Brunswick should do the same.
The goal is to improve co-ordination and address the pressure on provincial hospitals related to the number of their patients needing an alternate level of care.
A number of patients do not require the level of care provided in a hospital, and can be more appropriately cared for in a nursing home, special care home or their own home.
