Groundbreaking Held On Future Site of Residential Hospice Facility For Southeast New Brunswick

Shovels went into the ground today at the future home of a new residential hospice for Southeast New Brunswick.

The 2.2 hectare piece of land has been donated by the Hum-Lew-Sun Lions Club.

Hospice Greater Moncton Executive Director Tradina Meadows-Forgeron says the 10 bed facility is being built on Pleasant street in the east end of the city, Construction is going to begin in March. As soon as we are able to start digging in March 2020.”

She says it is an emotional time, because this has been 15 years in the making. She is very excited that it is finally happening.

“Currently, palliative patients are in hospital. We see some of them going into rooms where there are two or three other people and they are watching loved ones for other patients say good-bye. That is a very difficult thing for your end of life journey,” Meadows-Forgeron says.

A campaign is underway to raise 5 million dollars to build the centre. The federal and provincial governments are contributing one million dollars each for construction…

“We’re hoping to have staff trained by September or October of next year. Hiring will be done through Extra-mural and Hospice. We have already had inquiries from those wanting to work there. We hope to have our first clients through the door in November 2020,” Meadows-Forgeron says.
