Work to restore the banks along the Petitcodiac shoreline could begin as early as this Fall.
Moncton City Council agreed on a recommendation to reinforce up to 100 meters of the banks in an effort to preserve a portion of the Riverfront Trail.
City engineer Jack MacDonald recommended they start with using large rocks, known as rip rap, before adding things like a boardwalk.
He also suggested that council wait until the new bridge replacing the existing causeway be built, since it may affect the river’s flow.
“I think we do have to know what this river in terms of normality because it may start to cut more onto the Riverview side,” says MacDonald.
General Manager of recreation Catherine Dallaire says they consulted the Riverkeeper group.
“While rip-rap was not the favorite method to address the erosion, they understood that this section particularly behind 50 Assumption, required immediate attention and there’s cracking already in the trail,” she says.
Council will also initiate discussions with the Province for funding assistance.
