Moncton City Councillor Happy With Mountain Road Decision

Moncton City Council was presented with a study suggesting Mountain road should be converted back to four lanes.

The number of lanes was reduced in an effort to slow traffic in the area, however study showed an average of 70 kilometers per hour.

Ward 3 councillor Bryan Butler was pleased with the city’s decision to revert the road.

“I really did believe that it was an unsafe place for cyclists and traffic to be combined,” he says.

Butler brought forth the motion last year after he was almost involved in an accident.

“They hired a consultant, an expert on traffic, last night he come back and said that the road diet in that area had failed, that it didn’t work and now we’re going back to 4 lanes,” says Butler.

Butler says that while he very much supports the idea of active transportation, safety should be the top priority.

Although the existing bicycle lanes will be eliminated, the city is looking at other ways to support active transportation along Mountain road.

Adding a multi-purpose trail along the road was suggested, for use by pedestrians and cyclists.

The city will also be looking at implementing other measures to reduce speeding.
